The first thing that we want to do during summer months it is to spend the most time outside with our love ones , enjoying the beautiful weather and keeping ourselves hydrated and wearing proper clothing. Well it is kind of the same thing with dogs, it is very important to understand what is best for your dog during summer months in order to keep it cool and happy.
Some people have the wrong idea of shaving their dogs natural coat almost completely , "allowing more air to circulate through their bodies", but if your dog does not have the proper grooming it can backfire with skin problems, over heating, etc... dog breeds are different - here are some tips & tricks for the summer months:
a) Read the signs: Dogs cannot sweat like humans to regulate their temperature, instead they use their tongs by panting and breathing with the moist lining of their lungs as the refreshing surface- some of their sweat glands are located on their paws... So in conclusion if your dog is breathing heavily with the tongue out, it is a sign of trying to cool himself
b) Get Proper Grooming: It is important for your dog to keep cool, that means that if your dog does not have the proper cut, it will be uncomfortable for him (and you) ; the undercoat is actually part of a dog’s natural cooling system, but if not properly maintained it can become matted and prevent air flow across your dogs skin. Some shampoos and conditioners help to reduce the accumulated fur / hair underneath your dog's coat, this will keep your pet fresh and happy.
c) If possible try to play outside at "cooler" hours, this is early morning and late in the afternoon, in summary avoid the 12:00 to 3:00 hours of the day.
d) Always maintain their plate with water. Your dog should always be able to have a drink during the day, always watch their plate specially in very hot days
